ABSTRACT
This paper examined the pesticide use and pest management practices in cabbage cultivation using farm level cross sectional data. Vegetables are heavily infested with a number of insect pests and if left uncontrolled may cause heavy damage. Bio-pesticides and botanical pesticides are applied by a limited number of growers, while application of weedicides has been observed absent. The expenditure on chemical pesticides is explained by four variables having regression co-efficient of total family income (2.175), manures and fertilizer (-0.259), bio control practices (-0.131) and area (0.154). The optimum quantity of pesticide required for cabbage was estimated to be 0.495 a.i. lit/kg per ha as against actual quantity used (0.563 a.i. lit/kg per ha). The farmers has lost Rs. 663.13 per ha. Organophosphates, pyrethroids, organochlorines and fungicides were major groups of pesticides used. The major insecticides used were endosulfan (0.917 a.i. lit/ ha), butachlor (0.800 a.i. lit/ ha) monocrotophos (0.799 a.i. lit/ ha), chlorpyriphos + cypermethrin (0.759 a.i. lit/ ha), deltamethrin + triazophos (0.706 a.i. lit/ ha), dichlorvos (0.699 a.i. lit/ ha), dimethoate (0.630 a.i. lit/ ha), quinalphos (0.603 a.i. lit/ ha), imidacloprid (0.288 a.i. lit/ ha) novoluron (0.115 a.i. lit/ ha), indoxacarb (0.161 a.i. lit/ ha) and lambda-cyhalothrin(0.107 a.i. lit/ ha) and fungicides were mancozeb (0.900 a.i. kg / ha), copper oxy chloride (0.725 a.i. kg / ha) and carbendazim (0.675 a.i.kg / ha). On an average 8-9 applications of pesticides applied per crop per season. The study has suggested that for reducing the pesticide use, farmers need to be educated about the balanced use of pesticides, advised about indentifying the spurious chemicals and different nonchemical control methods and should be encouraged to adopt integrated pest management (IPM) practices.
