ABSTRACT
The present study deals with physico-chemical analysis of overburden dump materials and native soil around the opencast coal mine. Sampling of soil has been done from the vertical surface of the overburden and native soil at successive depths of 0-15 cm, 15-30 cm and 30-45 cm. These samples are analyzed critically to evaluate any deterioration in soil properties. The different physico-chemical parameters (pH, organic carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, soil texture, water holding capacity and electrical conductivity) have been analyzed. The soil texture of the overburden dumps has found to be sandy loam type soil and native soils have found to be sandy loam and loamy sand type soil. The required level of available soil nutrients (N, P, K,) of overburden dump materials is less than that of the native soil. Mining method negligibly alters the soil texture of samples. Other physico-chemical property of the overburden dump materials such as water holding capacity, pH, electrical conductivity and organic carbon, are lower than those of native soil.
