ABSTRACT
A vertical extrusion machine was developed to produce briquettes from de-oiled Jatropha seed cake. It comprised a die of 170 mm diameter and 60 mm thick, two rollers each of 75 mm diameter and 50 mm length and was powered by a three phase 5.5 kW electric motor. Tapered holes of inlet diameter 20 mm and outlet diameter 18 mm with a length to diameter ratio of 3.3 were made in the die for increasing compressive strength of the briquettes. The performance of the machine was evaluated in terms of size, density, compressive strength, and percentage formation of briquettes by varying the operating parameters such as rotational speed of the die (193 – 435 rpm) and moisture content of the feedstock (16 – 32%). The briquetting machine could successfully produce briquettes of diameter 18 mm and length 28.2 at 386 rpm for Jatropha seed cake (JSC) at 24% m.c. The density of the seed cake was increased about 1.5 to 2 times through briquetting. The percentage of briquettes formation, density and compressive strength of the briquette after drying were found to be 85%, 1115 kg/m3, and 3645.8 kPa, respectively for JSC. The briquettes produced were then used in the gasifier. A power generating system consisting of diesel engine coupled to an ac generator could successfully generate 3.5 kW of electricity using producer gas from the briquettes of JSC along with diesel with average pilot fuel substitution of 52.29 – 63.58% for HSD+PG (JSC). The maximum overall efficiency of system was found to be 20.13 and 13.57% for HSD and HSD+PG (JSC). Thus, briquetting JSC could be a suitable option for generating power by reducing handling, storage and transportation problems.
