ABSTRACT
Due to sub-zero temperature during winter months in cold arid Ladakh region, vegetable cultivation is impossible from November to March in open field conditions. Only answer for food security is cultivation of vegetables under greenhouses. Therefore, present study was conducted on spinach varieties Banerjee Giant and Shalimar Green under 3 types of polyhouses with the objective of suitability of locally available improved protected structures for spinach production during winters with ultimate goal of productivity enhancement. Seed of spinach were sown in 3 different types of polyhouses viz. Chinese type, LEHO type and local type. All the polyhouse produced a good crop of spinach. Otherwise in open field conditions, no crop is possible at all during freezing winters. Highest yield per ha was recorded in LEHO type polyhouse. Early yield was achieved in Shalimar Green while highest yield per unit was in Banerjee Giant. It may be concluded that performance of LEHO type polyhouse is best with var. Shalimar Green for early yield and var. Banerjee Giant for higher yield for overall productivity enhancement of spinach during winters in the cold arids.
