ABSTRACT
Brown plant hopper (Nilaparvata lugens)(Stal) is most serious pest of intensive paddy growing area in Chhattisgarh. A farmers field survey was conducted in the Tilda Block of Raipur (C.G.) district during kharif 2005 to understand the qualitative losses of BPH infestation. Panicle samples were drawn from the prone area of BPH infestation to examine the effect on paddy grain quality and weight loss due to BPH feeding. The losses of weight in different varieties ranging from 46-64% on panicle basis and 4 to 38% in grains weight were recorded as compared to healthy grains of the same variety in the same locality. Discoloration and poor head rice recovery was also observed in the grains collected from BPH affected plants. Swarna was found as a highly susceptible variety an milking stage of the crop is more prone to the hopper infestation.
