Residual effect of vermicompost and inorganic fertilizers of sprouting broccoli (B. oleracea var. Italica Plenck.) on succeeding cowpea pod yield and soil fertility in eastern Himalayan region

ABSTRACT
Field experiment was conducted during 2011 and 2012 at UBKV, West Bengal to evaluate the effect of residual vermicompost and inorganic fertilizers of broccoli cultivation on the succeeding vegetable cowpea pod yield and soil fertility. Broccoli crop was grown in factorial RBD with 3 replications by combining five different levels of vermicompost and four different doses of recommended inorganic fertilizers (120:60:60 kg N, P and K per hectare). Succeeding vegetable cowpea was raised on the same plots of broccoli field. The results revealed that integrated use of inorganic fertilizers and vermicompost of broccoli crop significantly influence the succeeding cowpea yield attributes and soil fertility. The nutrient combination composed of vermicompost (10 t/ha) along with 100% recommended dose of fertilizer recorded the maximum number of green pod (19.16/plant), pod weight (15.18 g) and pod yield (290.77 g and 7.70 t/ha).The same combination also recorded the highest residual N, P and K nutrient status of soil (183.19 kg, 17.44 kg and 122.94 kg per hectare NPK respectively). The present study thus indicate that a combination of higher amount vermicompost (10 t/ha) along with 100% recommended inorganic fertilizers may be adopted to achieve desired yield with sustainable soil health in broccoli-cowpea cropping sequence.
