ABSTRACT
Soil organic carbon (SOC) is critical in determining response to fertilization. The experiment aimed at evaluating the effect of combinations of four main levels of SOC (0.45%, 0.60 %, 0.80 % and 1.00 %) with four sub-levels of the recommended mineral fertilizers (No fertilizer, 75%, 100%, 125 % and 150% of recommended fertilizer dose) on growth, head yield and quality of cabbage (Brassica oleracea L. var. capitata) cv. Golden acre. Results showed significant differences in cabbage growth, head yield and quality (p<0.05) due to treatments and their interactions. Increasing fertilizer doses from 75% to 150% of recommended doses and SOC levels from 0.45 % to 1.00 % significantly increased the vegetative growth, head yield and quality of cabbage. It was also examined that SOC levels plays important role in determining the response of fertilizer doses. In general, 100% RDF showed highest response at lower SOC levels (0.45%) under the study. Further increases in RDF up to 150% could maximize crop yield only under higher SOC levels (around 0.8% to 1%) under the present investigation. The protein, sugar, fibre and vitamin C in cabbage head was significantly increased around 0.8 to 1.0 % SOC treatment over native SOC (0.45 %). This suggests that by increasing OC levels in soil, there is a possibility of obtaining higher yield and quality of cabbage under higher fertilization.
