ABSTRACT
An experiment was carried out at Main Horticultural Research and Extension Centre, University of Horticultural Sciences, Udyanagiri, Bagalkot (Karnataka) to study the response of nitrogen and phosphorus levels on the growth, yield and nutritional quality of okra [ Abelmoschus esculentus.( L.) Moench.]. Treatments included were 4 levels of nitrogen viz., 75, 100, 125 and 150 kg N ha-1 and 3 levels of phosphorus viz., 50, 75 and 100 kg P ha-1 with a constant dose of potash (62.50 kg ha-1).This study reveled that the application of 150 kg N and 100 kg P ha-1 significantly increased the plant height, number of leaves plant-1, number of branches plant-1, number of nodes on main stem, internodal length and leaf area. Increase in the yield parameters viz., fruit length, fruit diameter and number of fruits plant-1 were observed with higher application of N and P. Highest yield (12.92 t/ha) was obtained from 150 kg N ha-1, which was statistically identical to 125 kg N ha-1. In case of phosphorus, the highest yield of 12.12 t/ha was obtained from the treatment which receives 100 kg P ha-1. Application of lower dose of nitrogen and higher dose of phosphorus had favourable effects on days required for first flowering, days for 50 per cent flowering and days for first fruit picking. Iodine content was significantly increased with increasing nitrogen rate from 75 to 125 kg ha-1 and reduced at 150 kg N ha-1. Highest ascorbic acid (vitamin C) and total chlorophyll were reported in plots having received 150 kg N and 100 kg P ha-1.
