ABSTRACT
The study analyses the impact of group based activities for addressing the problem of labour scarcity in coconut plantations of Tumakuru district of Karnataka and discusses policy perspectives for enhancing profit and production efficiency. The study is based on primary data collected from the trainees of the vocational trainings and qualitatively analyzing the impact of group activity for devising policy perspectives. The trainees of vocational training programme have formed their coconut climbers group associations (regd.) and are getting assured employment round the year, enhanced income more than two folds and growers happy with increased productivity due to timely availability of labors for harvest of coconuts and other operations and these associations are functioning with satisfaction to both growers as well to labors youth. Going by the success achieved by the formation of groups in coconut crop, similar type of associations involving farmers and unemployed youths can be formed and they can be engaged in different crops to perform end to end operations. Group oriented activities are a must for addressing the labour scarcity problem. The expectation has been that these associations / groups would also be able to provide answers to many of the agricultural and rural problems.
