ABSTRACT
The present investigation was carried out during summer season 2013 at Horticulture Instructional Farm, Deptt. of Horticulture, S.D. Agric. University, Sardarkrushinagar (Gujarat). The experiment was laid out in Randomized Block Design with four replications and ten treatments viz., T1 (Black plastic mulch), T2 (White plastic mulch), T3 (Red plastic mulch), T4 (Yellow plastic mulch), T5 (Organic mulching), T6 (Green plastic mulch), T7 (Silver plastic mulch), T8 (Transparent plastic mulch), T9 (Biological dry material) and T10 (Control). The results of present study proved that soil covered with silver plastic mulch achieved highest morphological parameters viz., highest vine length at 60 DAS and at harvest (287.95 and 376.90 cm), respectively, sub creeper at 60 DAS (7.93), early female flower initiation (49.75 days), highest number of male flower (111.08) while quantitative attributes viz., fruit set (42.99%), fruit weight (5.26 kg), yield per vine (16.21 kg), yield per hectare (787.00 q), length of fruit (41.83 cm), width of fruit (40.49 cm) of watermelon. The economically remunerative i.e. highest net income (` 680595) and C:B ratio (1: 7.3) results showed by silver plastic mulch treatment.
