MANISHA MEENA, G.G. RADADIA and C.U. SHINDE. 2015. Screening of sorghum varieties for susceptibility against Rhyzopertha dominica (Fab.) under South Gujarat condition. Green Farming Vol. 6 (1) : 149-153 ; January-February, 2015

ABSTRACT
Growth and development of Rhyzopertha dominica (Fabricius) on eight varieties of sorghum viz., GJ-35, GJ-36, GJ-37, GJ-38, GJ-40, GJ-42, CSV 21 F and GSF-5 were studied under laboratory condition. Among the different varieties, the number of eggs laying varied from 6.33 (GJ-36) to 53.33 eggs (GSF-5). The orientation of adults was recorded minimum on var. GJ-35 (2.67) and maximum on GSF-5 (9.67). The developmental preference of larvae ranged from 63.29 to 85.03 per cent while it was 42.87 to 77.84 per cent for adults on GJ-36 and GJ-42, respectively. The maximum egg period was observed on var. GJ-36 (8.17 days) and minimum on the var. GSF-5 (7.27 days). The total larval+pupal period and total developmental period ranged from 38.37 to 40.47 and 45.73 to 48.60 days, respectively. The higher survival percentage was noted as 76.67 per cent (GJ-42 and GSF-5) and higher growth index 1.72 found in var. GJ-42. The total larval+pupal mortality ranged from 6.67 to 69.51 per cent. The pre-oviposition, oviposition and post-oviposition period ranged from 6.27 to 7.20, 35.67 to 39.13 and 6.33 to 7.87 days, respectively on different sorghum varieties. The longevity and total life cycle of male ranged from 46.93 to 51.33 and 93.53 to 97.87 days, respectively and corresponding parameters for female varied from 49.40 to 53.07 and 96.73 to 99.67 days, respectively. The sex ratio and fecundity varied from 1:0.33 to 1:1.96 and 198.33 to 291.17, respectively on different sorghum varieties. The susceptibility index ranged from 0.0337 (GJ-36) to 0.0413 (GJ-42). The chronological order of sorghum varieties for their non-preference to R. dominica was GJ-36 > GJ-35 > CSV 21 F > GJ-38 > GJ-37 = GJ-40 > GJ-42 > GSF-5.
