ABSTRACT
Foxtail millet (Setaria italica L.) possess dormancy which usually ranged from 7 to 35 days. In the present investigation, various physical and chemical treatments were imposed to break the dormancy of freshly harvested seeds of nine foxtail millet genotypes. The results revealed that ethrel at 25 ppm followed by pre-heat treatment for 48 hr were found superior in breaking the seed dormancy as they recorded significantly the highest mean germination (86.44%, 84.74%), seedling vigour index (2021,1848), dehydrogenase enzyme activity (0.072, 0.068) and alpha amylase activity (16.37 mm, 14.52 mm) respectively than control.
