ABSTRACT
Malihabad fruit belt of Uttar Pradesh is known for its prized mango variety Dashehari which is grown over an area of 28,000 ha in Mall, Malihabad and Kakori blocks of Lucknow. Mono-cropping of mango is mainstay for livelihood of scores of farmers. Weather vagaries and changing pest dynamics coupled with unavailability of processing industry in the region is making farm distress acute, particularly for small and marginal farmers. Survey conducted for socio economic and resource profiling of 1100 farm families in Nabi Panah, Meethenagar and Mohammad Nagar Talukedari villages of Malihabad, Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh revealed that majority of the farmers (71.27%) were in middle age group and around 31.50 per cent population had completed high school. Major chunk of farm families (63%) derived their livelihood from horticulture based enterprises. Small land holders (66.45%) dominated in all the sampled villages. More than ninety per cent population (94.27%) earned less than 2 lakh per annum. Around 74.18 per cent farmers owned mobile phone. The farming situation in these villages requires diversification of mango orchards, mango based processing industry, market linkages and agro-based subsidiary enterprises for augmenting farm income.
