ABSTRACT
Infiltration rates vary under different land uses and soil types. Determination of infiltration of land is pre-requisite for evolving suitable water management practices and also essential for use in agriculture. Infiltration rates are useful for determining hydrological soil groups, which in turn can be used for determining curve number for computation of total volume of runoff from the watershed. Double ring infiltrometer tests were done at central farms of Mahatma Phule Krishi Vidyapeeth, Rahuri to represent different soil types and land use systems. The rate of infiltration goes on decreasing along with the elapsed time up to certain limit and afterwards it becomes constant. The cultivated land falls under hydrological soil group 'B' whereas the Nilgiri land, Fallow land and Forest land falls under hydrological soil group 'A'.
Key words :
Hydrologic soil groups, infiltration rates, land use.
