R.K. SINGH and S.K. SINGH. 2020. Studies on performance of some quantitative traits in red onion advance lines for quality, growth and yield. Green Farming  Vol. 11 (2 & 3) : 221-225 ; March-June, 2020.

ABSTRACT
Onion is a photo-thermo sensitive crop and grown during kharif, late kharif and rabi season, though rabi is the main crop. About 73.23 million tons of onions are produced in the world from 3.65 million ha area. India, being major onion-producing country, produces 20.13 million tons from 1.19 million ha, with a very low productivity of 16.24 t/ha. It is used for flakes powder, paste, crush and pickle, etc. About 55-60% of onion comes from rabi season and 40-45% from kharif and late kharif season. Because of its high export potential, it comes under cash crop apart from vegetable. It is predominantly a rabi season crop and most onion cultivars are sensitive to photo period and thus their range of adoption is limited. The experiment was conducted at Nashik and Karnal during rabi 2016-17, revealed that at Nashik significantly highest gross yield (373.33 q/ha) and marketable yield (365.00 q/ha) were recorded in advance line-849. Highest total soluble solid (13.53 %) and dry matter content (14.81 %) were recorded in check variety Agrifound Light Red and were at par with advance lines-683, 776, 782, 825, 834, 848 and 849 in respect of total soluble solids, however, advance lines-683, 770, 776, 782, 825, 848 and 849 regarding dry matter content. At Karnal significantly highest gross yield (392.22 q/ha) and marketable yield (378.80 q/ha) were recorded in advance line-683 and were at par with advance lines-705, 776, 834 and Agrifound Light Red. Highest total soluble solid (14.07 %) was recorded in advance line-825, however, dry matter content showed non-significant differences. It is concluded that the advance lines performing good over the checks can be utilized by onion breeder to developed good quality and higher yield variety for different agroclimatic zones.
