MALLIKARJUN DHOTRE and T.B. ALLOLLI. 2011. Studies on shelf-life of onion genotypes under ambient conditions. Green Farming Vol. 2 (6) : 677-679  (November-December, 2011) (New Series)

ABSTRACT
Fourteen red onion genotypes were used for the assessment of shelf life attributes viz., PLW (physiological loss in weight), rotting, and sprouting as well as total loss under ambient conditions. Telgi Red recorded the highest PLW (24.40 %), rotting (26.52 %), sprouting (18.97 %) losses and hence, the highest total loss (69.89 %) at the end of storage period. and Bidar Local recorded least PLW (15.59 %), rotting loss (10.81 %) and total loss (35.95 %). Gulbarga Local exhibited the lowest sprouting (7.90 %). There was no rotting incidence up to 15 DAS (days after storage) in some of the genotypes viz., Arka Kalyan, Gulbarga Local, Ranebennur Local, Agrifound Dark Red, Agrifound Light Red, Gadag Local and Rampur Local. Whereas, Bellary Red exhibited no rotting incidence even up to 30 DAS. Only few genotypes (Rampur Local, Telgi Red, Agrifound Dark Red, Nasik Red and Arka Niketan) showed sprouting losses at 15 DAS. While, Arka Kalyan showed no sprouting even at 30 DAS. From the study, the genotypes like Bidar Local, Rampur Local, Kohinoor-9 and Gulbarga Local were identified for longer shelf life of onion bulbs which grown during kharif season.
Key words :
