R. BHAGYA. 2011. Studies on the inter relationship of physio-anatomical traits of mulberry leaf with economic characters of silkworm (Bombyx mori L.). Green Farming Vol. 2 (6) : 707-708  (November-December, 2011) (New Series)

ABSTRACT
A study was conducted to estimate the relationship between physio-anatomical characters and economic characters of Bombyx mori. L. Mulberry is major food for the silkworm rearing to get good crop which will reflect on the farmers. Hence, physio-anatomical traits are also important , while selecting improved mulberry varieties for qualitative assessment of leaf. The thickness of the leaf is very important as thicker leaf results in higher photosynthetic rate, less transpiration rate, higher moisture content and higher moisture retention capacity of excised leaves. Due to the positive significant correlation of palisade parenchyma cells to spongy parenchyma cells ratio, there was a significant increase in the conservation of water in leaf. Various physio-antomical traits of plant will have influence on the quality of leaf. Important economic traits of silkworm like effective rate of rearing by number, effective rate of rearing by weight, single cocoon weight, shell weight, shell ratio (%), filament length, denier, silk recovery showed significant positive correlation with palisade parenchyma to spongy parenchyma ratio, leaf thickness, moisture content and moisture retention capacity of excised of the foliage. Therefore, the breeders while selecting the varieties for field exploitation must bear in mind the importance of these physio-anatomical traits of leaves to obtain quality of silk. And path anyalysis indicated that there is interrelation ship between the economic character of silkworm Bombyx mori and physio-anatomical characters of the mulberry leaf.
