ABSTRACT
The experiment was conducted to study the genetic variability in Heliconia. All the genotypes showed considerable amount of variation in their mean performances with respect to the characters studied, indicates presence of sufficient variability and scope for further selection and breeding superior and desirable genotypes. Phenotypic coefficients of variation (PCV) were higher than genotypic coefficients of variation (GCV) for all the characters studied. Large difference between GCV and PCV were observed in number of shoots per plant (34.97 % and 39.09 %), number of leaves per plant (29.15 % and 31.85 %), spike length (47.97 % and 49.43 %) and spike width (25.06 % and 27.31%), indicating the role of environment in expression of these traits. All characters exhibited high heritability coupled with high genetic advance over per cent mean indicating the predominance of additive components. Thus direct selection helps in improving the characters.
