ABSTRACT
Field experiments were conducted during rabi season of 2013-14 and 2014-15 at S.V. Agri. College, Tirupati. The field experiments laid out in spilt plot design with three replications by taking irrigation schedules (drip irrigation at 0.7, 0.8 and 0.9 IW/CPE ratios and weekly check basin irrigation) as main plots and nitrogen levels (160, 200 and 240 kg ha-1) as sub plots. The study revealed that plant height, dry matter, yield attributes and yield were higher when crop was irrigated at weekly by check basin method. Among the nitrogen levels, the values of all the above parameters were found to be higher with the application of nitrogen at 240 kg ha-1. Significantly, higher water use efficiency (WUE) was recorded with irrigation through drip at 0.9 IW/CPE ratio than the other lower irrigation frequencies and weekly check basin irrigation. Crop fertilized with 240 kg N ha-1 recorded significantly the higher WUE than that of lower nitrogen doses. Among the irrigation levels, nitrogen use efficiency was found to be higher with weekly check basin irrigation which was on par to that of drip irrigation at 0.9 IW/CPE ratio, where as in N levels the higher NUE was recorded with 200 kg ha-1, which was significantly higher than with 240 and 160 kg ha-1. Benefit from per rupee investment was more with irrigation schedule of 0.9 IW/CPE ratio through drip. Interaction between the irrigation schedules and N levels exerted significant influence on growth parameters like plant height, dry matter, yield attributes, yield and benefit cost ratio, while the interaction was non-significant with respect to the WUE and NUE. From the findings of the investigation, it can be concluded that scheduling irrigation by drip at 0.9 IW/CPE ratio along with 240 kg N ha-1 was proved to be suitable combination for maximizing the yields of maize with higher WUE.
