ABSTRACT
The study was undertaken to analyze the correlation and path coefficient for yield and yield traits of thirty-nine (39) medium to long duration pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp.) genotypes (lines, varieties and cytoplasmic male sterile) grown at the International Crop Research Institute for Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) during kharif season of 2015-2016. Positive and significant association was recorded between grain yield (t/ha) and yield contributing characters viz., days to 50% flowering, days to maturity, plant height at maturity, number of primary branches and number of pods both in phenotypic and genotypic level. This indicates that these characters should be given more importance in making selections to improve more yields. While path coefficient analysis disclosed that days to maturity, plant height at maturity and number of pods had a high and positive direct effect in grain yield (t/ha) in both levels. Furthermore, the component of residual effect in phenotypic and genotypic on grain yield (t/ha) was 0.3093 and 0.2610, respectively, indicating that the adequacy and appropriateness of the characters studied.
