ABSTRACT
In this research, investigation was done on Brown plant hopper (BPH ) resistance in rice at phenotypic level. Screening of a set of 10 rice accessions to assess the levels of resistance to BPH by adopting the MSST (Modified Seed Box-Screening Test) revealed that the accessions viz., Rathu Heenati, PTB33, and PTB41 had the mean damage score of 3.767, 3.820, and 3.467 respectively indicating higher level of resistance to BPH. Other varieties such as Kuliadichan, Rasacadam, BPT5204 and Seeragasamba remained highly susceptible with damage scores 7.900, 7.911, 8.833 and 8.967 respectively. Results of days to wilt involving Rathu Heenati, PTB33, PTB41 and BPT5204 revealed higher level of resistance in PTB41 followed by Rathu Heenati and PTB33. The high level of resistance to BPH observed with PTB41 was confirmed at different growth stages and different loads of insects. Further, the individual plant response to insect attack within in accessions was varying widely.
