ABSTRACT
An investigation was conducted to determine the influence of nitrogen nutrition using combinations of sources on fruit quality of cucurbitaceous vegetable, bittergourd (Momordica charantia L.) using farmyard manure as an organic source. Three levels of nitrogen (200, 250 and 300 kg Nha-1) were applied in three ratios of organic-chemical N substitutions (1:1, 1:2, 2:1) at three different frequencies of application on equivalent N basis. The fruit quality was influenced by the nitrogen nutrition and highest level of N (300 kg ha-1) produced the maximum crude protein content. Crude protein content was also maximum when two parts of the nutrient nitrogen was applied through the organic source of farm yard manure. Increasing the nitrogen levels also increased the total P and K contents in the fruits. An inverse relationship was found in case of ascorbic acid ( vitamin C) in fruits and higher levels of nitrogen lowered the ascorbic acid content.
