ABSTRACT
Different aged male pupae of uzi fly i.e., 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 day old pupae were subjected to different doses of gamma radiation viz., 1, 1.5 and 2 kr. Various parameters viz., adult emergence (%), sclerotization (min.), mating percentage (%), mating behaviour (pre-copulation, copulation and post- copulation) were studied. Adult emergence percentage was in increasing trend from 3 day onwards till 8 day. Whereas, the sclerotization period was observed to be in a decreasing trend from 3 day old pupae to 8 day old irradiated pupae. However, there was an increase in the mating percentage of male uzi flies that emerged from 3 day onwards till 8 day irradiated pupae. The highest number of flies emerged was in the combination of 2kr radiation on 8 day old pupae (89.79 %) followed by 7 day (85.68 %) and the minimum sclerotization time taken by 8th day old pupae (42.59 min.) followed by 7 day old pupae (45.23 min.) at 2 kr radiation. Compared to different aged pupae, the maximum mating percentage was found in the uzi flies that emerged from 8 day old pupae (88.56 %), followed by that in 7 day old pupae (85.12 %) at 2 kr. Mating behaviour reveals that the irradiated male flies follow the same pattern and the same mating duration as in control batches, radiation did not have any impact on pre-mating duration, mating duration and post mating duration.
